I think it was invented as a substitute to expensive silk. Satin is more durable and machine wash friendly. Satin is a synthetic fiber that is woven a certain way to provide a shinny side. It was probably needed because it was a little cheaper. I think it was invented around the 1920s, but don't quote me on that. The advantages are, it looks great, it is cool to the touch and soft. the disadvantage is, some people say it doesn't provide as much breathing as cotton does.
