Do you wear shoes in your house?

I've come to notice that a lot of people don't wear shoes in their homes because it's dirty, it brings bacteria, etc. However, most of these people are Canadian, European, or Asian. I, as an American, wear my shoes all the time. The only time I'm barefoot is when I shower or before going to bed. I always get made fun of for wearing socks in the house instead of taking everything off. Dammit, why is this a problem? I'm from the West Coast and I understand a lot of people in the East Coast, be it snowy or rainy weather, take their shoes off to avoid a mess. How about others? What are your reasons? I prefer to leave my shoes on, thank you very much.
